How to make a simple monthly budget with ChatGPT

Use an AI assistant to sort your spending, build a realistic budget and plan a savings goal, without sharing sensitive financial details.

Most budgets fail because they're either too strict or too vague. An AI assistant can do the sorting and maths for you so you can focus on the decisions. A note before you start: never paste account numbers, passwords or personal identifiers. Rounded figures work fine. This is about organising your own numbers, not financial advice.

Step 1: See where the money goes

Here are last month's expenses (no account details): [paste]. Categorise them, total each category, and show what percentage of [monthly income] each takes.

Step 2: Sort needs, wants and goals

Sort my spending categories [list] into needs, wants and goals. Point out anything that looks surprising, without judgement.

Step 3: Build the budget

Build a monthly budget with income [income], fixed costs [list] and goals [goals]. Show it as a table using a method like 50/30/20, and explain the trade-offs.

Treat the first version as a draft. Adjust it until it looks like a month you could actually live.

Step 4: Plan one savings goal

I want to save [amount] for [goal] by [date]. Calculate the monthly and weekly amounts and suggest 5 places in my budget [paste] where it could come from.

Step 5: Review once a month

Here's my budget versus actual spending: [paste]. What went well, and what should I adjust next month? Keep the tone kind.
