How to find a product idea in customer reviews

A three-step method for mining best-seller reviews, spotting complaints that repeat across products, and turning one gap into a small digital product.

The fastest way to find something people will pay for is to read what they already complain about. Two to four star reviews of best-selling products are full of unmet needs, written in the buyer's own words.

1. Collect reviews from several best sellers

Here are reviews from [number] different best-selling products in [niche]: [paste]. Remove names, then tag each review with a short theme label.

Use at least five products. One product's flaws tell you about that product; the same complaint across five tells you about the market.

2. Cluster and filter

Group these tagged reviews into complaint clusters. For each, count how many products and how many reviews mention it. Drop anything that appears for only one product.

This step is what separates a real gap from one loud reviewer.

3. Score the gaps

Score these gaps [list] 1–5 on frequency, pain, whether a checklist, template or mini-guide could solve it, and whether I know enough to solve it.

Pick the top one, then ask the assistant to argue against it before you build anything.

4. Outline the fix

Outline a [checklist/template/mini-guide] that solves [gap]. Title, one-line promise, sections, and what the buyer can do after 15 minutes with it.

Small and specific beats big and vague.

Keep it honest

Reviews tell you what people want, not that they'll pay for your version. Treat the result as a hypothesis, launch small, and listen to the first buyers.
